3 Steps to Building Confidence & Believing In Yourself
Do you know what the most dangerous lie is:
“I can’t”
These two simple words are what most of us say over & over in our minds to persuade ourselves not to take risks. Because risks are scary, they make us uncomfortable and fear failure. When I feel this way, I remind myself that “failure” is simply a lesson that gives me the information I need to do better next time, and “being uncomfortable” simply means I’m having a new experience requiring growth.
Before I continue, I must let you know that I have struggled “BIG TIME” with believing in myself regarding my business and creating this website. It was a battle that I faced every day. So, as you read this, know these are lessons I practiced to push through self-doubt. When self-doubt arises, I go through these steps as often as possible to overcome the lie “I can’t.”
The first step is to believe you can achieve absolutely anything. By developing a positive mindset, you will gain the confidence to press forward. Believing in yourself becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy, knowing you will be that person who can show up and get results done, which leads to experiencing better outcomes in the things we do!
Benefits of Believing in Yourself:
Confidence!
If you don’t believe in yourself, no one else will. You are the only one who can build self-confidence & cultivate the positive attitude you need to believe in yourself & succeed in what you want to do in life.
It helps you accomplish your goals!
When you believe in yourself, taking the first step toward your goals is much easier. Self-doubt will try to convince you that your next step will cause you to stumble & fall. Think about this: Low self-esteem sees only the danger of failure while believing in yourself allows you to envision the possibilities of achievement.
It encourages you to keep going!
When you run into challenges or setbacks, you’re able to rebound faster & figure out a way to resolve the situation so you can get back on track toward your goal.
What prevents us from self-confidence:
Comparing Yourself
Comparison leads to unhappiness. We will always notice something another person has that we don’t have & feel like our life is somehow “lesser than” - which is a lie. The truth is we all struggle in different ways. We were all created with beautiful gifts & talents - embrace yours & the beauty that you bring to this world.
Past Experiences
Frequently, we find it hard to believe in ourselves or appreciate our positive qualities because of past experiences that have damaged our confidence.
Self-Sabotage
We are our own biggest enemy! Think about this phrase: You can’t control other people's words, thoughts, and actions, but you can manage your own.
We can also sabotage our efforts by procrastinating, dwelling on self-doubt, and ignoring opportunities to take action that will help our confidence. We may think we’re protecting ourselves from the risk of failure, but all we do is prevent ourselves from discovering what we can accomplish.
3 Steps to Building Confidence & Believing in Yourself:
Trust It’s Possible
Cultivate a practice of a saying, journaling, or writing a note you can see throughout the day of a positive affirmation that will build confidence within you. Believe in yourself!
Dream Big
Visualization lets you see the future you’re working towards. This will enable you to ensure you’re moving forward in the right direction and also help you keep your goals at the top of your priorities. This is why some people like to make vision boards - a powerful visual reminder of the future you’re working towards.
Take Action
This is where we can get stuck. Nothing happens if you don’t act! Most people don’t achieve their goals because they don’t take action, and the number one reason people don’t take action is fear. But fear is normal!
Courage isn’t the absence of fear - it’s the willingness to keep moving forward into the unknown despite your fear.
How do you take action with fear? You start small and take time-achievable steps in the right direction. Allow yourself some grace if you stumble and fall or feel discouraged. Start again, learn from the process, and keep going, trusting that you will reach your destination as you proceed.
Next time you hear yourself whispering, “I can’t,” - release those words and say, “I can!” Everything you do in your life results from your belief in yourself and the confidence it’s possible.
